Biography

Dr. Stefania Lamon-Fava is Scientist I on the Cardiovascular Nutrition Team at the HNRCA and Chair and Associate Professor in the Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition program at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. Dr. Lamon-Fava researches the molecular mechanisms by which nutrients regulate gene expression and metabolism, with emphasis on inflammation and lipid metabolism. Specifically, she studies the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on inflammation in relation to heart disease and brain health focusing on the transcriptomic and metabolic changes and mechanisms of gene expression regulation; she also studies protein kinetics using stable isotope methodology. Dr. Lamon-Fava’s current studies include a randomized clinical trial to assess the differential molecular mechanisms of EPA versus DHA regulation of inflammation and lipid metabolism in subjects with metabolic syndrome, a randomized clinical trial assessing the dose-response to omega-3 fatty acids in clinical depression, and an animal study assessing the brain tissue and vascular histopathological alterations associated with an atherogenic diet. She is a Fellow of the American Heart Association Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology and is a reviewer for numerous journals, including the American Journal of Cardiology, Arteriosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, Circulation, Journal of Nutrition, Metabolism, and Lipids. She is a member of the Italian Medical Association, Massachusetts Medical Society, and American Society for Nutrition
